Jacking Dre synth squiggles and delivering rhymes with an auctioneer's ease, Los Angeles rapper Defari certainly has the skills to succeed in hip-hop — if he could only decide whether to spit for major-label cheddar or preach to indie sweaters. His debut, Focused Daily, dropped on Tommy Boy in 1999, and generated barely a ripple. Trapped in an unknown-but-not-underground purgatory, Defari lashed out with this collection, released in 2003, which finds him angry and determined, his upper lip curled as he slays his doubters with each syllable.
