Textural and varied, this is more than just pretty-sample-wallpaper
1993 | Label: Ninja Tune
Trip-hop starts here. The Jazz Brakes albums started in 1990 as nothing more than a series of tools for DJs to use for scratch and sample material. But as the tempo of rave music approached escape velocity, DJs, producers and even dancers sought shelter in the mellow pace and rich textures of these records and they soon became an end in and of themselves. Vol. 4 is probably the most fully formed of the series: it contains more than just lush hip-hop wallpaper, like the funny (and very clever) "Mumble" and the great boogaloo cut-up "Uptight."
