I grew up thinking Domenico Scarlatti was a fairly good composer who wrote rather twiddly piano music. It wasn't until the Early Music movement began that I realised that Scarlatti on the harpsichord was a wonderful treat of which I had been deprived, (with the best intentions, of course). So I got used to enjoying Scarlatti as he heard it himself (most of the time, though he did love long enough to write for the early piano). But all of a sudden it got to be fashionable with the piano virtuosi to play him on piano again, and the 'authentic' style drifted back into obscurity again. This disk is a delight; the 'Essercisi', the first volume of Scarlatti's work to be published in his lifetime, played on a proper harpsichord, and played very well indeed. Buy it. You will hear a superb sample of his limitless inventiveness; even at a HUGE cost in downloads I think it's worth it! (Even if I can't spell exercises!)
