Chris McGregor: Cape Town to Free Town

It wasn't easy, being the interracial Blue Notes in 1963 apartheid South Africa: a black horns-and-rhythm combo with a white pianist/music director, Chris McGregor. They skipped out of Cape Town the following year: went to a French festival and didn't return. In its early days, the Black Saint label went out of its way to feature free jazz. This set matches together pianist Don Pullen with the many woodwinds of Joseph Jarman (flute, alto flute, piccolo, tenor, soprano and clarinet) and drummer Don Moye. The four group originals, although sometimes using themes, are quite spontaneous and most noteworthy for the interplay between the unpredictable Jarman and the powerful pianist.
