five stars for five tracks
First five tracks: Herbie Hancock's recording debut, a 1961 session for Warwick Records featuring Pepper Adams on baritone sax, Donald Byrd on trumpet, Hancock on piano, Layman Jackson on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Tracks 6 and 7 are from another session, presumably fronted by Byrd. Track 8 is from a Booker Ervin record featuring Booker Little--not sure why it's here. Not an audiophile recording but all instruments are easily heard. Some of my favorite Donald Byrd.
