Rollins or Trane ?

EMUSIC-Luke

Rollins or Trane ? for saxophonists , this was a big question after birds death in the fifties, but are we really beyond that point ? of donny mac caslin it was said he was a coltrane scolar, but listen to this platter ! you can hear all the muscle, vibrato and tounging of rollins (who adored hawk), and still feel the upsoaring lightness of trane (who mus have listened to pres). and then you find this combined with the guitar of ben monder ! believe me : its the best for quite a while !

They Say All Music Guide

Donny McCaslin, who was originally a John Coltrane-inspired tenor saxophonist, has certainly grown as an adventurous improviser in the years since he debuted. On Soar, he begins and ends the set with a Panamaniam folk song, contributing seven originals of his own. McCaslin utilizes the wordless vocals of Luciana Souza on some of the ensembles and there is solo space for guitarist Ben Monder and pianist Orrin Evans, but the leader is the main star much of the time. His music is haunting, unpredictable, melodic in spots, and beyond simple categorization. It is consistently intriguing and inventive. – Scott Yanow
