A shame this is not better known.

I know people railed against it at the time because Doyle was suppose to be a guitar hero blazing the trail Stevie started, but who would want to do that!? Instead Doyle went the other way trying to write songs that were great and focusing on his soul influences and it made this album very good. No there isn't much here for the person looking for guitar glory but what you will find is deep songs with deep grooves and funky flourishes. If you like Sly and the Family Stone, Prince, anything funky this record has it. Not to be skipped that's for damn sure.

top notch album

Download the entire thing. Not a bad track on this. I just don't understand why Doyle hasn't released more solo work.

With Doyle Bramhall II, the bluesman continues to move deeper into soul, which isn’t surprising considering that Wendy & Lisa, Prince’s collaborators during the mid-’80s, produced Vol. 2. While there is stilll a distinct bluesy bent to his guitar playing, the material is more soul-oriented and polished than before, which will initially alienate some of his contemporary blues fans. However, Vol. 2 shows considerable musical invention and skill, particularly during its instrumental passages. It’s just unfortunate that it loses momentum due to inconsistent songwriting. – Thom Owens
