Dr John classic

HUTCH13

* i had heard Dr John collaborate with others, but never listened to a proper Dr John album. i am more traditional with my blues. i am mesmerized! Fantastic. Lou Reed and Tom Waits had a bastard child who joined up with Van Morrison at prep school and played hookey with Miles Davis in High School. John McClaughlin ("devotion" era) then threw him in a organic groove blender with Indian Music, belly dancing rhythms, Southern U.S. R&B, and jazz. Call it "psych-a-whatever" - this is great music, culminating the vibes of NOLA with all its history and mystery into a clunky, funky delivery

What Is and What Was

El Raptor

I've been a Dr John fan, since the 60's when I first heard the title cut "Gris Gris" - in the darkness outside myself... [Ooh!Thatwassomething...] "Mama Roux" is my other fav. Some may not get it, but those of us [insideandoutsidemyhead] that remember "Underground" FM radio [WNEWw/AllisonSteeleTheNightbird,Roscoe,etc] BEFORE there were 'genres' - U-Noe-Da-Deal!

I couldn't disagree with the review below more. I don't believe this is overindulgent. It is a great musical statement by a legend. This is however probably a hard pill to swallow for some. It is not mainstream, but if you like world music, or tom waits, or anything that is more vibe oriented than hook based you will enjoy. It is a great example of music from new orleans, mixing all of those influences from the Caribbean that makes new orleans what was and is.

A lot of hype for mostly crap. Overindulgent semi psychedelic nonsense.

Scene: New Orleans Funk, 1960-1975

By Austin L. Ray, eMusic Contributor

For better or worse, New Orleans will always be known as a party city, thanks in no small part to the two-week celebration of parades, beads and general Bacchanalia known as Mardi Gras. And like any great party, NoLa has excellent food and music in spades. In fact, The Big Easy is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to recorded song. Widely celebrated as the birthplace of jazz, New Orleans introduced the world to… more »

They Say All Music Guide

The most exploratory and psychedelic outing of Dr. John’s career, a one-of-a-kind fusion of New Orleans Mardi Gras R&B and voodoo mysticism. Great rasping, bluesy vocals, soulful backup singers, and eerie melodies on flute, sax, and clarinet, as well as odd Middle Eastern-like chanting and mandolin runs. It’s got the setting of a strange religious ritual, but the mood is far more joyous than solemn. – Richie Unterberger
