Duke Ellington and his Orchestra, Treasury Shows Vol. 13
2008 | Label: Storyville / The Orchard

A remarkable series of documents, Treasury Shows is a ten-volume, double-album set of Duke Ellington recordings recorded at the end of World War II. Ellington Treasury series

whaley39

Much like the Date with the Duke series commissioned by Mel Torme, this is a documentary record of the band led by a 20th century genius. The playing is a bit mixed in this series, but there are gems to be mined in each one. There is stuff that Duke would try out, and if it didn't seem to work, can it or bring it back with changes and a new title. The only drawback is fidelity and it is ok for normal listening if you are not an audiophile. I always wonder why he used Kay Davis, maybe an acquired taste. Have you ever heard a bad Johnny Hodges solo?
