This is my favorite Earlimart album. Beautiful songs from start to finish.
I've been a big fan of Earlimart for a while and I agree that this is their best album to date. Their other albums are solid but maybe have some weak spots. I can listen to this entire album over and over.
Just discovered these guys, and they've really grabbed me. Wonderfuly organic yet hooky American indie rock crafted around mature, intelligent lyrics. I'm gonna have to check out their earlier stuff.
No idea how I found this, but I, Katrina, queen of the fabulous lyrics postings, am going to use these lyrics!
Why it took me so long to finally listen to Earlimart's new album is beyond me. I guess I was spending too much time trying to figure out why there was so much fuss over Panda Bear's new album and how Beirut could sound amazing on one track and like I was in the band on another. Anyway, I digress. This album is fantastic to say the least. The reviews below are very accurate. Not sure who at eMusic is in charge of putting one of those, I don't have to think, I'll just buy it, pink checkmarks next to this album, but it needs one...
Why isn't this album showing up on year-end "best of..." lists? Beats me. For my money, Mentor Tormentor is one of 2007's best releases. Consistently solid from start to finish, MT features Earlimart's strongest songwriting yet, as well as its strongest production. The album sounds incredible. Also a great surprise is the poppy "Happy Alone," featuring Ariana Murphy taking the lead.
This easily makes my top 10 of 07. Meloncholy but not depressing (the Elliott Smith influence is evident), it's also uplifting and in general just makes me feel good. Standouts include Happy Alone, 700>100, Everybody Knows Everybody, Just Because, and Cold Cold Heaven.
Filthy Doorways is too much noise, too little enjoyment for me. While I enjoy Treble & Tremble a great deal, it doesn't pack quite the punch of MT. This is the catchiest Earlimart album to date. While it certainly owes a stylistic debt to Elliott Smith, Aaron Espinoza and company have put forth a powerful identity for their band with this release; one filled with pop greatness, subtle experimentation, and solid performances.
Builds on Treble & Tremble and the Answers & Questions EP with a solid, full "Earlimart" sound and a gift for shifting your emotions every so slightly from song to song. Definitely recommended.
