Earth, Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I
2011 | Label: Southern Lord

Dylan Carlson has been leading Earth down the same Dead Man-esque — as in Neil Young’s spooky Jim Jarmusch score — path for more than five years now. And while all of the band’s post-Hex albums have been essential listening, Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I is downright stunning, full of tumbleweed tropes that make riding off into the sunset sound as hip and heavy as an old Morricone soundtrack. To top it all off, we still have the second half of this sprawling set to look forward to in 2012, as it was originally intended as a double LP.

A little too repetitive

Whimper

Drone, yes I know. Atmosphereic, certainly. But what I was hoping for was something with a little more direction. I have the patience for 15 minute instrumental rock cycles when, like Mogwai or Godspeed You Black Emperor, they have a sense of build or direction. But I found that all of the pieces on this album and its successor just noodled around with the same four chords again and again and again, without changing or progressing in any way. It's fine to leave on in the background, but if you're ever stuck actually listening to it, it gets tedious before long.

A God-Send (sorry...)

CaSundara

I downloaded 'The Bees Made Honey...' first and was impressed, but this easily surpasses it. The addition of the cello provides extra depth, and the tracks are slightly more complex in general (I did say slightly!). This is my favourite Earth album and was worth every penny. I sleep easily after playing it, sometimes dropping off while it's playing (and that's a good thing for an insomniac like me). The name of the album is just perfect for this beautifully dark and intoxicating music.

New Earth

Amazing. Drone gods continue on this introspective, quiet tension road. Dark, uneasing music for a lot of alone time. Distorted guitars and slow tempo reverb - now with violins and strings. Intense. If you know Earth - Yep, "Hex" on style, a touch darker the "Bees...". I llove this so much. If you do not know Earth...Did you ever see "Dead Man" with Neil Young's Score?

WTF?? R U KIDDING?

Hoofprints

A five track album and three tracks are Album Only downloads???? I am supposed to buy a twenty minute track based on a 30 second sample when I cant even hear enough to tell what the song is. eMusic -- this kind of marketing is stupid. Dont even put this stuff on your lists if I cant listen too the tracks and cant decide which tracks to buy.

more Earth goodness

schmorge

If you liked any of their post-Hex output, this'll be right up your alley. It's darker and denser than their last couple of albums, but still endlessly relistenable and haunting -- The kind of album you can put on repeat for a couple of hours and not get sick of.

Kicking at the Boundaries of Metal

By John Wiederhorn, eMusic Contributor

As they age, extreme metal merchants often inject various non-metallic styles into their songs in order to hasten their musical growth. Sometimes, as with Alcest and Jesu, they develop to the point where their original vision is at least partially consumed by their new sounds, and their albums feature as many or more elements of post-rock, prog, hardcore, alternative, industrial or jazz as they do metal. Regardless of the genres in which they dabble, acts… more »

The Noise of Neu!

By philip sherburne, eMusic Contributor

No history of electronic music would be complete without a chapter dedicated to Kraftwerk, the German quartet who introduced synthesizers and chugging, "motorik" rhythms to pop music - and in so doing laid the groundwork for techno (and left no small mark upon hip-hop as well, given that their "Trans-Europe Express" was heavily sampled for Afrika Baambaata's "Planet Rock"). Fewer genealogists of electronica remember to include the contributions of a group called NEU!, but the… more »

2008 Rewind: The Year in Metal

By Cosmo Lee, eMusic Contributor

The decreasing cost of recording and distribution (on the Internet, anyway) has resulted in a tsunami of new metal releases. Like restaurants in New York City, you could try out a new one every day for the rest of your life. But remember: dipping your toes in the ocean is much more enjoyable than trying to drink it. Use, then, this roundup of 2008s best metal releases as leads, not as permanent destinations. The Grind Goes… more »
