Delightful assortment of popular Rautavaara

dfowler

Rautavaara is a late 20th century Finnish composer. Angel of Light and Cantus Arcticus are two of Rautavaara's more popular pieces, and this disk provides first rate performances by Osmo Vanska and his forces.Cantus Arcticus is particularly intriguing -- I consider it a concerto for birds and orchestra since it seamleslly intermingles bird calls into the music. Recording quality is exceptional, revealing all the textures laid out by the orchestra players. I find this a wonderful addition to my Rautavaara collection, but I think it would be a great introduction to anyone curious about Rautavaara or modern Finnish music also.
