Just not a very good record

wasit10538

I downloaded this and listened to it... once. With the exception of "Don't Bring Me Down." I adore ELO but eight ninths of this wan little record could be purged from their discography and nobody would be the wiser.

Late 70s - rock ballads extrordanaire

djsully

This 2001 recording of the 1979 classic adds 3 additional tracks that work well in the mix. ELO and Jeff Lyne pay hommage to the Beatles, disco jams, the Moody Blues and the Bee Gees with tight jams and superb orchestration. They also achieve the "wall of sound" experience that was pinoeered in the 60s by Phil Spector to create a unique sound that is clever, tight and fun to listen to. "Discovery" may not break much new ground, but the music still sounds fresh 30 years later. Not many bands can say or have ever achieved that!

ELO does disco and ballads: 5/5

logic1000

Following up "Out of the Blue" was probably impossible without making changes. ELO dropped their lush orchestra for more focused, driven, and upbeat sound. You'll still find the orchestral arrangements heavy in most songs, but it seems less a focal point this time around. Some will probably write this album off as a hollow "wannabe" ELO sound, but Jeff Lynne always writes great music. Tracks 1, 5, and 7 are wonderful, and they still make me smile; track 4 is deliciously quirky; and tracks 2 and 8 are classic slow jams.

Adventures with the Vocoder

By Hua Hsu, eMusic Contributor

There is a primordial glee that comes with donning a mask and pretending like you're Frederick Douglass, or a flapper, or Spider-Man - anyone but yourself. But to alter one's voice - this is a more subtle delight. You probably recognize the sound of the vocoder, even if you've never heard the name. The vocoder is a speech synthesis system that changes the human voice into a robotic purr, allowing users to disguise themselves behind… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Electric Light Orchestra continued on their winning Top 40 ways with the release of Discovery. Now pared down to the basic four-piece unit, Jeff Lynne continued to dominate the band and they still got their hits (this time around it was the smash “Don’t Bring Me Down”). Elsewhere on the disc there was, of note, “Last Train to London” and “Confusion.” Though Discovery charted well, it was becoming obvious that ELO were starting to run themselves out of useful Beatles hooks with which to fuel their hit-making machine. [The 2001 CD reissue on Epic/Legacy adds three previously unreleased bonus tracks: a home demo of "On the Run," a home demo of "Second Time Around" (a song Lynne never finished for the album), and a cover of Del Shannon's "Little Town Flirt."] – James Chrispell
