Mass for A Capella Androids

BeckoningChasm

Interesting deep-throated drones, like a pipe-organ sized harmonica or a swarm of angry robot cellos. When I first heard this, I wasn't overly impressed but in a second listen I heard some very interesting things going on under the buzz. It's slow and stately as it makes its way across the ears. Very spiritial music, though not in the usual way.

unusual, spacey, fragile

AbŕghačlD'Ore

A very crisp finely-woven basic-sound carpet with occasional sound rugs of more substantial electronic sound-threads and occasionally overlaid with the light footsteps of someone passing to check all is well. I found it refreshingly different electronic music, quite melodious and flowwiiiiinnng. Sorry about the imagery, I love weaving ... this music reminds me of fine glazed pastel-coloured cotton carrying occasional ice-blue mohair, spring-green Alpaca and filaments of rich-burgundy fleece. The album has music that sounds fragile except for the last piece which is more substantial due to its drone qualities. I could not relax with it, it felt too fine to be envelopping securely. But I could meditate with it as it is clear and focussed and firm.

Five more astonishing compositions on long string sculpture-instruments, including the marvellously flowing “Work for 4″ performed on a 145-foot long string installation, already a modern classic. “Space Between” surprisingly produces some sounds normally associated with electronic music, and “Body Music” suggests a kind of celestial Delta-blues with its bar chording technique. A CD that will appeal to many listeners. – “Blue” Gene Tyranny
