intriguing, but repetative

slidewell

I have found many interesting and satisfying reinterpretations of Monk's music here at Emusic, such as Anthony Brown's Asian American Orchestra and Knut Kristiansen, both of whom I was previously unfamiliar. Elliot Sharp's solo guitar takes on Monk are sadly lacking in texture and variety. Sharp obviously can play, but he falls into some repetitive riffing in his improvisations that not only fail to connect in any appreciable way to the compositions but are just down right annoying. To be fair, fans familiar with Sharp's work may find something illuminating here, but for this Monk fan, it leaves a lot to be desired.

Solo guitar takes on Monk

Adam Winer

A lot of Monk covers sound the same - these do not. Some very intriguing solo guitar takes on these knotty tunes. The track listing here in EMusic is wrong, though. Track 1 is Misterioso. Track 3 is Bemsha Swing. Track 4 is Round Midnight.
