A contrite Eminem takes some getting used to
2010 | Label: Aftermath

"Them last two albums don't count," Eminem offers on "Talking 2 Myself" before proclaiming that "Encore I was on drugs/ Relapse, I was flushing 'em out." In this light, it's easy to view Recovery as the 12-step program. Specifically: This album's the step where the addict tries to make amends to everyone he's ever wronged, from fans that thought (like he does) that his last few albums were garbage, to his ubiquitous on-again off-again ex-wife Kim Mathers. At one point, he even offers mea culpas to folks he was thinking of insulting. (Sadly, the Insane Clown Posse might have to wait a couple more lifetimes before Em gets around to their apology.)

A contrite Eminem is an Eminem that takes some getting used to, especially when that contrition comes in the form of bathetic tracks like "Going Through Changes" (which, yes, samples the one and only Black Sabbath ballad). That said, it's hard to ignore his conviction. He spends a good deal of the album spitting out lyrics like there's a gun to his head, proving that the linguistic dexterity and speed he exhibited on albums past is still something to reckon with. And while what he offers as a clean-and-sober… read more »

5 out of 10. At his best when sticking to the theme of Recovery. Many tracks seems like retreads of tracks from other albums.

Guess Who's Back?

Eminem lays down another truth filled rap about life and living it. Just finished listening to the whole album today and stoked to see him continue his venture.

Okay, alright...

He goes from knocking Moby years ago to making track #7 that is one vintage vinyl blues looped refrain away from sounding like a Moby product. Had to get that in. Solid album that is catchy and filled with fire. I dig and have finally caved and bought a full length eminem album. Ok, there, I said it.

not worth full track purchase

The album as a whole is better than most hip-hop but I would start with these cuts 1st. They are Em on the top of his game and must haves if your into hip-hop. I find myself playing these the track #'s the most. 6,7,9,10,11,15,16. Track #9 is my personal fav I bump it all the time. In that song Em may have layed down one of his tightest, fastest verses ever (unfortunately it's not on the preview). Enjoy

Hey Ma: Maureen Yancey Remembers Her Son, J Dilla

By Hua Hsu, eMusic Contributor

There's a disarming effervescence to Maureen Yancey as she shares memories of her late son, the Detroit producer and rapper J. Dilla. It has been over three years since Dilla passed away from complications related to lupus, yet she speaks of him as though he were still a constant source of amusement and inspiration. When asked if Dilla ever tried her seemingly infinite patience, she laughs: "Of course he made me very mad. For a… more »

They Say All Music Guide

As late as April, the title of Eminem’s follow-up to Relapse was set to be titled Relapse 2, but the accumulating material for the release continued to stray farther away from the sound of Relapse. Realizing it wouldn’t make sense to treat his seventh studio album as a sequel — from both lyrical and production standpoints — Eminem dubbed it Recovery. Proving the veteran MC’s continued relevance, “Not Afraid,” the album’s first single, entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number one. – Andy Kellman
