Ecce homo

After the widescreen expansiveness of his spaghetti Western soundtracks, Morricone took a sharp left turn with this work. Ecco Homo is a far more intimate work, although in its own way just as atmospheric as his previous outings, led by the drifting, spooky, echoing voice of Ella Dell’Orso over a spare, hushed five-piece group. The main title, “Venuta Del Mare,” captures the mood perfectly, the instruments minimalist and discordant, the singing floating over the top like phantom smoke. It’s disturbing, but it’s still oddly compelling listening.
