Ennio Morricone, Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (The Good, The Bad and The Ugly)
2011 | Label: EMI Music Publishing Italia Srl / Rossiter Road

The two-note call and the reverb guitar conjure up the open space of the desert in just a few notes in what might be Morricone’s best-known theme. Not as minimalist as his earlier soundtracks – brass and choirs weight in sparingly – he makes small pieces into near-symphonies, with motifs for each of the major characters, using them to illustrate the tensions and conflicts onscreen. Ultimately, though, it’s the main theme that captures the open, sprawling spirit of the film with the long, haunting whistle drifting over the plains.

The redigitalized version is great fun to listen too, with background sounds that I hadn't heard before.

A great remastering and, for those who only know the original domestic release, many more cues from the film than were originally offered. A definitive soundtrack offering.

It's the very nature of music — of art, even. The Six Degrees features examine the relationships between classic records and five… more »
