Relentlessly catchy and adamantly loud
2011 | Label: MUTE

From the mid ’80s to the mid ’90s, Erasure, together with Depeche Mode and the Pet Shop Boys, pretty much defined synthpop. As time marched on, that conclusiveness became a cross, and the London duo rarely acknowledged club and electronica trends. Produced and partially played by Frankmusik, an English electropop upstart half their age, and mixed by Robert Orton, who twiddled the knobs for Lady Gaga’s The Fame, singer Andy Bell and keyboardist Vince Clarke’s 14th album changes that, finding the pair sounding like the synthpop kids who sound like them. It’s relentlessly catchy, like just about everything in Erasure’s catalog, but it’s also adamantly loud. While most Erasure hits accentuate the treble, Tomorrow’s World lays consistently heavy on the bass.

Bell’s voice has also deepened. Where he once smoothly crooned in an androgynous tenor, he now belts in a veteran Broadway baritone, and AutoTune is unmistakably in the house. His sentiments are sometimes streamlined to the point of inelegance: “Everything is physical, it really turns me on,” he gushes in the opening track “Be With You.” But Erasure’s sincerity and simplicity have always ranked high among its attributes, and on future anthems like “Fill Us with Fire,” Clarke’s… read more »

Fabulous!

From start to finish, this is the best Erasure album ever. Every song is a gem, but I especially love \"Be With You,\" \"A Whole Lotta Love Run Riot,\" \"When I Start To\" and \"I Lose Myself.\" Simply great!

Terrific

Tremendously catchy - lots of fun, catchy hooks. Enjoyed this so much more than 'Light at the End of the World.' Only one problem - too short. Should have sprung on the deluxe version to get a couple extra tracks, So glad to a new album and in proper form.

Shiny and new

This album is a perfect blend of classic Erasure and the excellent solo release from Andy Bell called \"Electric Blue.\" With Frankmusik producing, the album goes a little more techno, a little more autotune, a lot more bass. Andy's singing is still excellent, and Vince's compositions are not redundant even after all this time. Get past all the E's in the opener, \"Be With You\" and keep listening. The gems are often and throughout, and many of the songs already scream REMIX! It's dancy, it's flashy, but it is still fundamentally Erasure. My only dislike is the autotune, and the use of trendy studio tricks - especially when they mess with such a great voice!

File under: One of the richest (and most diverse) catalogs in independent music Flagship acts: Goldfrapp, Depeche Mode, Liars, Apparat, Erasure, S.C.U.M. Based in: London, England For an artist who adopted the moniker theNormal, Daniel Miller's life and career have been anything but. In 1978, he one-upped punk rock with an analog synthesizer: Since the keyboard required no musical knowledge whatsoever, he reasoned, it must be even more punk than an over-driven Gibson Les Paul. Six Degrees of ABBA Gold

By Barry Walters, eMusic Contributor

It used to be easier to pretend that an album was its own perfectly self-contained artifact. The great records certainly feel that way. But albums are more permeable than solid, their motivations, executions and inspirations informed by, and often stolen from, their peers and forbearers. It all sounds awfully formal, but it's not. It's the very nature of music — of art, even. The Six Degrees features examine the relationships between classic records and five… more »
