A tour de force of pop glitter, jazz swing, folk moodiness and a dollop of hip-hop swagger
2012 | Label: Heads Up

Now Esperanza Spalding is making even the Grammys look hip. In her first outing since she was named Best New Artist in 2011, Spalding puts a dozen tunes into her stylistic spin cycle for a tour de force of pop glitter, jazz swing, folk moodiness and a dollop of hip-hop swagger on the dense-but-dazzling Radio Music Society. This is the work of an artist who refuses to choose, mocking genre labels with guileless ambition. (Her original concept was to pair this disc with the classically-oriented, string-laden Chamber Music Society back in 2010, until her record company convinced her the menu would be too large for public consumption.)

By ignoring boundaries, Spalding upends expectations. She enlists august jazz tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano to provide a dulcet lilt to a Stevie Wonder cover (“I Can’t Help It”) and hip-hop titan Q-Tip to play glockenspiel and co-produce the jazzy tribute to her native Portland, Oregon(“City of Roses”). Assembling a phalanx of 23 players and vocalists for a flashy, powerhouse “Radio Song,” she sings about the giddiness of being seized by a new jam coming out of the speakers as her own electric bass wends its way through the song’s buoyant center. Three songs later,… read more »

Not Sure About the Hype

carldd

Sure, she can carry a tune and it has a jazzy feel and its somewhat a unique sound but, try as i might to find it, i don't hear anything that reaches down in my gut and grabs me. if it takes that much effort...

Endangered Species

This is a venturesome treatment of this very challenging composition. The vocal work is great . I would say though that most of the other tracks tend to meander a lot and I don't really feel a strong groove in most of the record. I appreciate Esperanza and she's got exceptional talent but this project leaves me cold. I'm more jazz and groove oriented in my tastes and this is much more pop oriented.

Young, talented, multifaceted, fun, and its jazz

Slamslamslam

LIke seriously jazz. Not pablum for the populi. It is unfittingly female and mellow. This woman's personality seems very impressed in the style, like manu chou, a particular spirit motivates all. One can hear the temptation of imitation in many songs. Spalding's influences are remarkably varied, but she never quite looses her voice.

Six Degrees of Esperanza Spalding’s Radio Music Society

By Kevin Whitehead, eMusic Contributor

It used to be easier to pretend that an album was its own perfectly self-contained artifact. The great records certainly feel that way. But albums are more permeable than solid, their motivations, executions and inspirations informed by, and often stolen from, their peers and forbearers. It all sounds awfully formal, but it's not. It's the very nature of music — of art, even. The Six Degrees features examine the relationships between classic records and five… more »

Six Degrees of Esperanza Spalding’s Radio Music Society

By Kevin Whitehead, eMusic Contributor

We tested the effects of increasingly smaller spaces on the music of Esperanza Spalding, but the most notable thing about her album Radio Music Society is how expansive it is, incorporating hip-hop, pop and R&B into her cool, curling jazz. In this Six Degrees, discover other artists who, like Spalding, reached beyond the borders of jazz for inspiration. It used to be easier to pretend that an album was its own perfectly self-contained artifact. The great… more »
