Essential Etta James

EMUSIC-0279B586

Just wonderful!! just more of her perfection. Who could take a Rolling Stones classic "Miss You" and make it into something different and memorable?? a musical genius . Sit back and enjoy more of her gift to us.

Good collection but...

It's not the 1993 collection of Chess recordings by the same title - which is what the Bill Dahl review is referring to -but a recent import. Still, it's a good collection of her more recent work. The arrangements by Cedar Walton are great, but here's e-music pet peeve # 174: Cedar Walton is not the composer of "In My Solitude" nor "Night and Day" nor "Cry Me a River", just to mention three of the errors in the credits. You guys either need an "arranger" tag, or just forget it.

Contemporary Blues

By John Morthland, eMusic Contributor

Six Degrees of The Essential Nina Simone

By Will Friedwald, eMusic Contributor

It used to be easier to pretend that an album was its own perfectly self-contained artifact. The great records certainly feel that way. It's the very nature of music — of art, even. The Six Degrees features examine the relationships between classic records and five… more »

They Say All Music Guide

The Essential Etta James comprises 44 tracks summarizing the long and brilliant Chess tenure of “Miss Peaches,” Etta James, opening with her 1960 smash “All I Could Do Was Cry,” and encompassing her torchy, fully orchestrated ballads “At Last,” “My Dearest Darling,” and “Trust in Me,” and continuing on through her 1962 gospel-rocker “Something’s Got a Hold on Me,” the Chicago soul standouts “I Prefer You” and “842-3089,” and her 1967 Muscle Shoals-cut smash “Tell Mama.” A few of the ’70s sides that conclude the two-disc set seem like filler when compared to what preceded them, but most of the essentials are aboard. – Bill Dahl
