This album just put on a rubber dinosaur suit and trampled all over my brain like it was a 1/20 scale model of Tokyo. Little tiny people in my head are running down the little tiny streets, stopping only to point skyward and scream "EX-GIRL!!!!" This thing is a modern classic... not for the faint of heart, but a must-hear for those with a sense of musical adventure and an appreciation for the beautifully chaotic.
I've just recently started looking into the Japanese rock music scene, and Ex Girl is right on top of my list of bands I've discovered. This is deffinently going on my permenent favorites list.
My favorite Japanese band and the origin of my handle, eX-Girl's bizzare frog-obsessed no-wave punk-opera style is what hooked me on seeking out the kind of over-the-top creative weirdness only found in the Japan music scene. If you ever get the chance, SEE THIS BAND PLAY! Their stage show is nuts.
If Shonen Knife are too cutesy for you and the Boredoms are too scary, Ex-Girl provides a happy medium. This female Japanese trio adds random synth squonks and unexpected tape-splice left turns to their angular, almost Wire-like art-punk tunes, coming up with a uniquely bizarre but accessible sound. Try "Hettakorii No Ottokotou" for a five-minute distillation of what's going on here.
