Electronic music for home listening that lives up to its name years later
Label: TVT Records

Though many prefer its more intricate cousins, for my money this is the release from the Artificial Intelligence series on Warp that has held up the best, and lives up to the "electronic music for home listening" brief that defines those halcyon days of post-rave, post-Detroit innovation. Working under his Futuristic Underground Subsonic Experiments moniker, Richie Hawtin builds up from the slinky funk of the title track to black-light dancefloor workouts like "Substance Abuse" and "Train Trac" with elegance and precision. I still don't understand just how these warm synth pads and solid, simple shapes sidestep banality and land solidly in the "compulsively listenable" part of the library. Listen and try to figure it out.

A Classic

I searched for this for years until finally I found it a few months ago, a real classic from a techno legend. Broad spectrum of styles from downbeat stuff to acid stompers like FU2. Totally unmissable

Been looking for this for years - ever since my early 90's tape of it wore thin from repeated plays. Love the downtempo stuff - really deep acid loveliness and the couple of banging 4/4 tracks don't dominate or stick out . Remember when electronic music wasn't all about the glitch?

Matmos' Electronic Dozen

By Drew Daniel (Matmos), eMusic Contributor

It was difficult to arrive at a reasonable selection for our Electronic Dozen — "electronic music" governs an unruly multiplicity of styles and scenes, and eMusic's selection is disorientingly wide, particularly in material released over the last six years. Our list slants strongly to enduring classics that we feel that everybody should hear, but which perhaps aren't the obvious starting points (i.e., for us Kraftwerk and Throbbing Gristle and the Human League kind of go… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Dimension Intrusion alternates minimalist stompers like “F.U.” and “Train-Trac” with more melodic, contemplative material. The latter made Hawtin a perfect match for the other producers in Warp’s Artificial Intelligence series (B12, Black Dog, Polygon Window). Despite his direct Detroit inspirations — exemplified on the requisite automobile track “Nitedrive” — Hawtin encounters familiar territory on Dimension Intrusion’s more downtempo tracks: “A New Day,” the title track, and “Into the Space.” – John Bush
