Classic English group bring rock's fire to timeless folk.
2003 | Label: Folkprint / Voiceprint

By the time of this 1979 live disc, Fairport had been deep in English folk music for a decade. Although the early linchpins of Richard Thompson and Sandy Denny were no longer involved, they remained a formidable unit, as a rocking "Matty Groves" proves in its relish of lust and blood. Their take on "Sir Patrick Spens" brings an upright nobility to the song, while "Flatback Caper" and "Dirty Linen" show a downright alarming tightness… read more »

The AMG review explains the historical perspective in detail, above. Note: This is exactly the SAME material that's on the other Fairport Convention 'Encore Encore' album on the Relix/Egami label hee n eMusic, so don't waste downloads getting both. I downloaded both way back when eMusic had NO download limits. I didn't notice a significant difference in the sound quality of one over the other, although all the MP3s on eMusic back then were 128k Constant Bit Rate. Since we can download anything we previously downloaded without counting, I should download the VBR versions, compare them for sound quality, and report on it here. (Note to self - LOL). SAME ALBUM AS: Artist: Fairport Convention Release Date: April 11, 2000 Genre: Rock/Pop Styles: Classic Rock Label: Relix / Egami

They Say All Music Guide

Recorded during Fairport Convention’s 1979 farewell tour (a hiatus that lasted for only six years) and originally released on vinyl as Farewell Farewell, Encore Encore: Farewell Tour isn’t the best live Fairport album — that would be House Full, from the classic 1970 lineup — but it’s a surprisingly solid release from a lineup of the band too often discounted by casual fans. Highlights include a spirited take on the old chestnut “Matty Groves,” this time puckishly incorporating a snatch of the traditional bluegrass tune “Orange Blossom Special” courtesy of Dave Swarbrick, and a powerful, blues-tinged take on “John Lee.” This remastered edition also includes a rare 1979 single, “Rubber Band,” a playful tune about Fairport’s ever-shifting lineups, and three instrumentals, including a sterling version of the classic “Dirty Linen.” Encore Encore is for true Fairport Convention fans only, but it’s well worth picking up. – Stewart Mason
