A handful of new street poets captured their tough upbringings through hyper-articulate rhymes in 2009. Leading the pack was Fashawn, a Central California-reared emcee barely out of his teens. His debut album Boy Meets World — produced by standout Los Angeles beatmaker Exile — mixes stories of shoot 'em ups and poverty with oft-funny, always-poignant tales about the trauma of adolescence. On "Life As A Shorty" he speaks on a third-grade fight with an older, taller foe: "Got sent home/But I held my own/Slept in every day/ It was like vacation." Like most everything else in Fashawn’s life, apparently, the situation turned up roses.
