Andrew Bird's schroom-munching cousin

Anahoj

I haven't felt compelled to write a review on a new (to me, I mean) artist in quite a long while. But this album has had me surprised. My first impression was of a more playful Andrew Bird, one who perhaps dropped acid and took road trips more often than tinkering with Gramophones in the barn. The lyrics are clever and take on more meaning after a few listens... In my favorite line from the opener "Funtimes in Babylon", he's asking for one more chance to "Abuse my lungs". "Before they do my face up like a corpse and say 'get up and dance'... Sad and lovely, it gets me every time. There are a couple of duds here and there, but overall it's a strong album, and I recommend enjoying it as a whole. If you're on the fence still, DL tracks 1, 2 & 3

Fear Fun is a fantastic (and fun) debut!

vak78

I've been playing this album so much it's getting a little ridiculous, but it's a testament to the powerful combination of great lyrics (sometimes humorous, sometimes beautiful, sometimes both) and music on this album. I love Fleet Foxes, but I've been listening to Father John Misty a lot more.

Fear Fun but don't fear this album

GoFlames

Musically this album sounds like it was produced by George Harrison as it has a fun country/honky-tonk vibe at times while also displaying guitar licks that sound like they're right out of the Beatles Revolver album. Dido to what the previous reviewer said in that this album comes off as incredibly genuine and not derived or lazy at all. The harmonies are beautiful and magically placed throughout the album. Lyrically this album serves as a window into the humorous landscape that shapes Tillman's subconscious.

Fear Fun - Josh Tillman Lightens the F Up

nathanjr

J Tillman is dead but now Josh Tillman can live a better life as Father John Misty. On Fear Fun, Tillman mines the walls of Laurel Canyon and comes up with some gems that might make you trip balls if you licked them. The vocals are superb, and while some of the music maybe "familiar" it is played with zeal and too much honesty to be brushed off as derivative. Lyrically Tillman is funny as hell and tells the story of how and why Father John Misty came to be. Download the whole album, and take a trip Foxes fans!
