"A Proper Singer"
is what Tony Engle of Topic Records called Fay Hield when he signed her... and she is -in the vein of Norma Waterson, Eliza Carthy, et al. Fay has Norma and Eliza's innate understanding of how much emotion to invest in a song, avoiding overwrought phrasing. You can hear some of the rich, soaring quality of Maddy Prior or Sandy Denny in there too. And, indeed the excellent accompaniment is sympathetic and supportive as this material requires. Nice choice of songs, too. Try "The Hunstman" or "Looking Glass" as an intro.
