Felix Laband, Dark Days Exit
2005 | Label: Compost Records /GoodToGo

Beats take a backseat on the third album by this South African producer. It's a record foremost about the delicate interplay of electronic and acoustic elements, particularly in its creative use of nylon-string guitar. "Whistling in Tongues" has a subtle bossa nova rhythm that, combined with the guitar, flute, and xylophone, suggests a deeply cool folk music of uncertain origin. "Falling Off a Horse" rapidly loops two fingerpicked chords and sets them against watery sound… read more »

Dark Days Exit

lutherspook

At first, it is difficult to imagine a greater displacement of album cover to music contained within, the macabre skull is in contrast to the light colours of rounded sounds that make this collection a favourite since its release. However, on reflection it is the delicate bone sounds and whispering vocals that haunt you. I don't want to die tonight. I don't want to die tonight.

Whistling In Tounges FTW

Esnce

first track is best on the album by far, the guitar work and production quality are amazing. the rest is good with a few highlights. Overall worth the album listen but nothing is quite a cool as the first song.

Oy

Many of these tracks carry traces of ear-worm qualities but in the end they never quite hold what they promise...bland by the second listen!

the year i discovered this album nothing could compare. it remains one of my favorite overall electronica albums of all time. so there. subtle, nuanced, engaging, intelligent, beautiful, emotionally evocative, never boring. Red Handed in particular is a standout.

Exquisite!

This is a timeless classic. It reminds me of Plone (For Beginner Piano) when Emusic had it on a while back... Simply beautiful.

Most excellent

Arawak2

As others have noted, this is a very atmospheric, thoughtful album with excellent production quality. Great for listening to while writing code, staring at the ceiling, or watching raindrops slide down glass. It's intelligent electronica, not just someone messing around with pads. You won't be disappointed.

grounded but lifting

daud

The rare kind of Ambient music that is grounded in terms of being physically enticing and not just floating in and out. Yet, at the same time it is lifting your spirit. Enjoy the flight and dream or create something. If you enjoy this album try "Electronic Birds".

...that are, for lack of a better word, entrancing. Rich, beautiful music that defies expectations.
