If you don't hear the Modest Mouse influences, you've never heard ~This Is a Long Drive...~ or ~Lonesome Crowded West~. Seriously... Listen to "Novocain Stain" and tell me there is no similarity...? You can't. Iss nah posseebohl. Generally speaking, Figurines are more upbeat and not nearly as dissonant as Modest Mouse... which leads me back to Isaac Brock and crew. Either way, they're good enough, but I'd rather listen to any of the first three MM LPs... they're the genuine article.

Great voice, sound.

Don't let the opening track "Race You" (a bitter, fragile ballad) fool you. It is a beautiful song that expresses the delicacy and sweetness of Christian Hjelm's voice, but as the album progresses the character of the album changes dramatically: what was once angry and forlorn is now confident, poppy, and playful. "I Wonder" is upbeat and enjoyable, particularly the vocal wails of "Wa-ah-ah-ah-ah". Another highlight comes a few tracks later in "I Remember" a bouncy gem laced with catchy handclaps. Overall the album has many beautiful pop songs with only brief moments of filler. Lastly, I do not see the comparisons to Modest Mouse; they sound quite a bit more like Pete and the Pirates in terms of vocals and overall sound. (By the way, if you like Figurines, check out Pete and the Pirates "Little Death")

It took me a while to come around, but Figurines are probably my favorite "discovery" on eMusic so far (after about 8 months). There are enough instantly-catchy tunes on both of the albums available here to keep even those with short attention spans interested, and repeated listenings are highly rewarded - assuming you're one of those who believes that album addiction is a good thing!

They Say All Music Guide

This second effort from Figurines is enough to make a listener do a double take. The Danish fourpiece sounds almost exactly like Modest Mouse. If Isaac Brock isn’t providing the vocals, it’s his Copenhagen equivalent. Album closer “Release Me on the Floor” is the greatest offender or the finest copy, depending on one’s viewpoint. But Figurines don’t place all their eggs in one basket, finding lesser influence from Pavement, Built to Spill, and a myriad other Pacific U.S. bands. It’s almost as if they’ve gone to their local listening library, picked a region of the world, and sought to mimic the artists from that area. But Figurines do their impersonation well enough and with enough hooks and fine melodies to come out with a more than winning result. They add enough to the mix to be more of a Lush to My Bloody Valentine rather than a Yatsura to Pavement. There’s not a clunker in this batch of 14 sunshine-laden songs. And though some of the production is a bit too reminiscent of 1990s indie rock, the songs are strong enough and the attitude addictive enough to position Figurines as more than an also-ran. – Tim DiGravina
