In the magic zone between oddity and accessibility
2011 | Label: Universal Records

Although she co-writes most of her material, Florence Welch sings like an actor. Her dramatic inflections matter more than her image-packed and overtly-poetic lyrics. Those qualities, which evoke yesteryear’s art-pop idols like Kate Bush and Annie Lennox, are — paradoxically — what makes her accessible to adults and Glee kids alike. Like those forbearers, Welch occupies that magic zone between oddity and accessibility; she’s the witchy-yet-sexy ginger.

Unlike its predecessor, which was overseen by several producers and featured a multitude of co-writers, Ceremonials is produced solely by Paul Epworth, Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” collaborator who co-wrote three and produced four of Lungs‘ tracks, and shares writing credits on most of the material here. As a result, Welch’s sophomore album is far more unified: Epworth pumps nearly every track up to stadium size with cavernous bass, reverberating drums, pounding piano and plenty of studio manipulation. For what’s essentially a piano-based pop record, Ceremonials is hella loud. Guitars may be implied more than felt, but its claustrophobic atmospherics rarely allow any air or any rest.

Although religion is mostly referenced indirectly, Ceremonials — as its title suggests — has the vibe of an all-day revival meeting, even as… read more »

Goaty

The album is good. I think it will appeal to fans of Annie Lennox, Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush and Tori Amos.

Florence flops

I Love Florence and the Machine. Their previous album combined artiness with memorable hooks and porpulsive rhythms. This album seems to leave the fun and enter the dreaded zone of pretentious melodrama. Her theatrical voice definitely needs more energy than this album provides. There is not one radio friendly song in the bunch. Half of her vocals semmed slathered in some sort of sonuc sludge. Here's hoping her next album has a better producer, sharper faster songs and focus. She is still a major original talent.

One of the best albums I have heard in a long time

EMUSIC-0226BFA9

I love this album. The songs are cohesive and Florence's voice is beautiful. A lot of emotion on this one. The fact that she writes or co-writes her material and has that wonderful voice makes her much more talented that most of the acts out there these days, as far as I am concerned. Would love to see her in concert.

Wow!

There is so much that is great about this album, but Florence's voice is one of the best of this generation. Ranked with Adele and Amy Winehouse.

Problematic but worth it?

EMUSIC-020AC63D

I too had difficulty downloading it, I ended up having to do it song by song which was a pain. The bigger problem, though, is what Florence thought was acceptable in her music video for "No Light, No Light". It was blatantly racist and I am very disappointed in her, almost to the point of not purchasing this album. I love her music, but the guy in blackface? Never ok, Florence. Never ok.

I've read some of the so-so reviews but I really like this cd. The songs seem cohesive to me and it is very 'listenable'. I an especially listening to 'seven devils'.
