Post-mid-life crisis album for the sophisticated pop fan.
2005 | Label: Aquarian Nation Records / The Orchard

Full disclosure: I recorded and mixed this album. But I did it because I'm a Francis disciple and this is a fantastic record! Francis tells rich stories, peppers his lyrics with astrological and religious identity struggles and displays truly genius musical moments. He got his start fronting the '80s band It Bites! and has released several other solo records; his earlier albums were slightly poppier, and this record is for a more mature listener. The subject matter is deep: war ("Soldier"), middle age ("Middle of Life"), father[s] and son[s] ("Through My Father's Eyes"), reflecting the hard-earned wisdom of an artist who's weathered a mid-life crisis and come out the better for it. He's somewhat difficult to classify as his work can span multiple genres and styles — his influences include early Genesis, solo Paul McCartney and even Cat Stevens — but Francis touches many listeners and manages to suck you in to each song.

Another great find thanks to emusic playlists

eclecticdownloader

I sometimes wish there was a way of saying thank you to other emusic members whose lists lead you somewhere really special; finding this was one of those times - sometimes browsing is just too vague and unrewarding, so checking out a list, and then coming across a gem makes the emusic experience worthwhile. Some of the best music I have now was sourced this way, and I'd never have found it any other way. Brilliant!

How did I ever miss this 2

Can't see where the stars go but all 5! Actually I know why I overlooked this. I've tried really hard to like the old It Bites but I just can't get there. The new It Bites is astonishingly good, and it was mainly to hear John Mitchell's contribution to Francis's stuff that I gave it a listen. This sounds exactly what Paul Simon would have sounded like if he had grown up in Cumbria in the 70s. The production is wonderfully restrained, and, apart from an awful guitar solo, is a superb platform for the words (thank you Mr. Pakman). As a Yes fan from way back I don't usually concern myself too much with the words, but these are breathtaking, a glimpse into the heart of the man who takes the listener on an emotional journey. It's also great that his years in the States have done nothing to ruin his soft Cumbrian accent which adds to the authenticity of the whole experience. Track 11 - we're still waiting.

This is one of the best albums I've ever downloaded from eMusic. Hell, one of the best albums I've bought in my life period. Absolutely gorgeous melodies, arrangements and that voice! I just adore this.

--In Edit-- eMusic has finally replaced the defective Track 11, so I've removed my complaint from here. This is a top-notch album, my favorite of Francis'! Highly recommended.

Modern Singer-Songwriters

By David Pakman, eMusic Contributor

Music by singer-songwriters is generally my favorite because it's so hard to do well. See, I grew up on prog rock. I appreciated technical musicianship over the craft of writing a song; I didn't pay any attention to melody, harmony or how well the song even held together. In other words, I loved Rush. It wasn't until I tried to write pop music myself in the early '90s that I realized it's quite hard to… more »
