Gathering all the essentials in one convenient place
2008 | Label: Frank Sinatra Enterprises

If you want all the milestone hits and signature songs from the latter half of Sinatra's career in a single swoop, this 2009 anthology does the best job of gathering all the essentials in one convenient place, including actual chart hits ("Strangers in the Night") as well as concert perennials ("Fly Me to the Moon") and Sinatra fan faves ("Drinking Again"). There's also a "new" item in the form of his unissued 1984 "Body and Soul," enhanced with a recently recorded orchestra track.

REMEMBER THE TIMES

ALLEARSFORMUSIC

This is a great group of memorables. Frank's mellow voice sounds like it comes from the heart of experience. He demonstrates an effective use of the pause. Most of the melodies remain in our hearts through listening experience. Become a listener.

A Misnomer...sort of

To say that this album contains the “Best” of Frank Sinatra is a bit of a stretch. On emusic, Frank Sinatra Enterprises offers 36 outstanding albums, plus you can find many works by Sinatra scattered throughout emusic. In my opinion Frank Sinatra was the best there ever was. Anything you choose will be simply fine.

Very good 60s Frank

Great cuts from the Reprise years, but certain songs here are re-recordings from the Capitol years, and, in my view, weaker versions. "Come Fly With Me" has a new surliness and none of the devil-may-care charm as its original, and "Luck Be A Lady" here is needlessly harsh. The Reprise sides are often magical though, from the middle age romance of "The Way You Look Tonight", to the hard earned strolling blues of "That's Life". Nice capsule of later Sinatra, as he discovered aging with melancholy and grace.

Title speaks for itself

I was wondering if emusic was ever going to get this album. One of the best sampler albums of all times for any artist. This is a great primer for anyone not too familiar with Sinatras work, or like me, its a great collection of his finest works without making my own mixed tape. Highly recommended.

Teenage Graceland

By Wayne Robins, eMusic Contributor

After Elvis went into the Army and before the British Invasion, the years 1958-63 were rock's forgotten years. But they were the years that shaped the musical tastes of baby boomers and of acts from the Beatles and Rolling Stones to Bruce Springsteen and the Ramones. Hear the dance sensations, the one-hit-wonders, the girl groups and doo-wop singers, surfers and rockabilly twangers, the birth of Motown, the evolution of R&B into soul and so much… more »

Frank Sinatra

Young Frank. In the span of an artistic career that encompassed six decades, Sinatra's "youth" represents a quarter of that, post-Bing and pre-Elvis, overlapping both in his accession to the throne of American song. The sharkskin persona and Rat Pack genuflect of his later years might overshadow his considerable musicality and innovation as a "saloon" singer - as he liked to think of himself late night gathered around a piano with afterhours pals and a… more »

Six Degrees of The Essential Nina Simone

By Will Friedwald, eMusic Contributor

It used to be easier to pretend that an album was its own perfectly self-contained artifact. The great records certainly feel that way. But albums are more permeable than solid, their motivations, executions and inspirations informed by, and often stolen from, their peers and forbearers. It all sounds awfully formal, but it's not. It's the very nature of music — of art, even. The Six Degrees features examine the relationships between classic records and five… more »
