It's hard to believe that Sinatra, upon turning 50, felt like celebrating the September of his years — especially when he had another 30-plus years of living to do. For this 1965 album, which utilized the marvelously Brahmsian arrangements of Gordon Jenkins, Sinatra contemplated life and love and the passage of time, never failing to balance sincere sentiment with self-deprecating wit. "It was a Very Good Year," Ervin Drake's epic metaphor of existence and experience depicted as vintages of wine, is the song you know, but the rest of the album, particularly the title track, is every bit as good.
