Frank and George - A great combo

BigUn

Most enjoyable, and of course, the material is wonderful. Frank is his usual impeccable self, and the bass and drums on this CD are in a class by themselves. Corey Christiansen plays appropriate and sophisticated second guitar and contributes one solo on "I Got Rhythm". A minor complaint to this listener is that Christiansen's electric guitar tome doesn't always mesh well with Vignola's classic archtop sound. As a result, my favorite cuts are the ones where Christiansen is absent. This isn't a criticism of his playing, which is a perfect foil for the music; I just don't care for the contrast between to tone of the two guitars. It's still far above many similar recording.

They Say All Music Guide

Guitarist Frank Vignola can play nearly any style, from sounding like Django Reinhardt to fusion. On this set of 14 familiar Gershwin songs, Vignola plays swing without copying Reinhardt, creating fresh ideas within the vintage genre in his own style. Accompanied by Corey Christiansen (who sticks to playing rhythm guitar), bassist Tom Kennedy and his frequent musical partner drummer Joe Ascione, Vignola mostly performs straightforward solos, with the exception of a humorous rendition of the closer “But Not for Me.” The music is quite accessible, witty in spots, and always swings. The overall results are rewarding and easily recommended to fans of the swing guitar. – Scott Yanow
