First, a word about eMusic's eccentric cataloging. I searched for Rzewski compositions under the classical section and didn't find this. It was by fluke, searching for Rzewski as a performer, that I found it. Except, he isn't the performer on this recording - Stephen Drury is. Look for Stephen Drury as performer and you'll never find this one. Oh, eMusic, genuinely world-class music should not be hidden away like this. And then we have this Drury version as 38 separate tracks - theme plus 37 variations, presumably as the composer intended. OK? But what about the Ralph van Raat version where the whole thing is presented as a 62 minute single track download? Much more economical but which version do you prefer? Who cares - it's Rzewski that matters and this is a work of genuine stature that must be heard.
