Youthful piano works of a master symphonist
Bruckner is best known as a symphonist and in his day as an organist, but the first 10 works on this disc are his youthful piano pieces. There are subtle and haunting melodies, and an architectural strength that demark his symphonies and the pianist plays them superbly with just the right touch and pacing. The final piece is not in Bruckner's hand, but a transcription of the Adagio of his 7th symphony by one of his students. It, too, has just the right sound and tempo. While wonderfully performed and interesting, it cannot compare to the orchestral version.
