A surprisingly refreshing indie experiment
2010 | Label: Jagjaguwar / SC Distribution

On paper, Gayngs' Relayted should be an obnoxious, winking, unlistenable mess. A collection of nearly two dozen musicians from a number of indie bands (including Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and Rhymesayers rapper P.O.S.) jamming together on lite rock songs, the album should theoretically collapse under the weight of hipster irony. Yet Relayted gets by on the strength of the songs and the sweetness of the delivery. Tellingly, the strongest track is a cover of Godley & Creme's "Cry," but the sad, spacey spirit of that song carries over on the subliminally funky "The Beatdown" and sparse, longing "No Sweat." Couple that with an epic synth orgy of a slow jam called "The Last Prom on Earth" and you end up with one of the more surprisingly refreshing indie experiments of the year.

Catch yourself wondering

Everytime time a track from this song came up during my commute, I had to check who it was. It catches you off guard and you start thinking "this is pretty good... and who the hell IS this?". That happened to me enough times that I'm back here downloading the 5 of 11 tracks that didn't catch my ear the first time.

I realize that it isn't entirely fair to review an album without listening to the whole thing. That said, I can tell you that if I were to download this album that the soprano sax on track one would prevent me from making it to any other tracks. Life is too short for that crap.

Unique

Muse8

Unique, beautiful, charming, understated, moving. This does not come across as ironic to me, but rather a heartfelt homage to a certain musical style, exemplified by 10cc's "I'm Not In Love", which was claimed as the inspiration.

Indie folk? Are we listening to the same record? This is like hipster Animal Collective-ish band takes on cheesy soft rock radio ballads, 1970s soul standards and 90s r&b, run through an old jukebox. "Faded High" is my immediate #1. You can hear the old country and Barry White and jazz influences, warped into something that sounds futuristic. It's not perfect, but weird and awesome.

At first wasn't sure how I felt, then I saw them live tonight, and the songs are amazing! Great band, great music, great people.

Good ... but

Fun to listen to the first couple times. Interesting sounds. But the soul seems to be missing. Ends up sounding like a fun experiment without a lot of meat.

mister naysayer, would have his PoV trump another's. listen for yourselves and make up yer own minds! any opportunity to here Justin Vernon's voice is a good opportunity! production values are great, very introspective and shoe-gazey indie folk!

Don't listen to one-review Chiabotti there, this is not an amazing record.

Holy Crap!

This record is amazing! Don't be surprised when it starts making "Best Of" lists. There's not a bad track on it. Even "The Last Prom on Earth" is awesome in its cheesiness. Do yourself a favor and download it all right now!

eMusic's Best Albums of 2010

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

The 80 albums that populate eMusic's Best of 2010 run the stylistic gamut: There's skronking avant-jazz, surf songs for beachside loungers, grinding metal and delicate folk. What unites these records, though, is the personal vision behind each of them. It doesn't matter if the instrumentation employs guitars, djembes, sax or just the human voice — the albums on this list represent a dedication to a personal aesthetic, and the songs are the sound of that… more »
