Fractal Attraction is a compelling modern jazz offering that highlights Ess’ finely integrated ability to create fiercely swinging cuts, along with energetic funkiness and modern improvisational pieces. “Ascent” is one such piece that clearly highlights Ess’ ear for the broad spectrum of jazz. “Letter from Boston” is filled with rapid fire lines that Ess and Alexa brilliantly articulate at up-tempo speeds. “Tanabata” a piece inspired by a festival for forlorn lovers in Japan, is a beautifully haunting piece where the bass is featured as the melody instrument and then joined by voice in a developing motif. The final song “Fractal Attraction” is the only piece where lyrics are used, which skillfully ties the journey to a peaceful ending. Fractal Attraction adds to the modern jazz fabric, but also takes it a step further by developing the voice as an equal instrument in the mix, showcasing Ess’ ability as a respectful and insightful composer.
