Difficult Music

Logex

The best label I can give this is "conceptual music". The music is not atonal, but the musical ideas are so dense and complex it's like reading Joyce's Finnegan's Wake. Nice to have on your bookshelf and flip through occasionally, but who's going to sit down with it? A common reaction to Sorabji is to say "Well, I don't really enjoy listening to it, but it's obviously really great." That is a hallmark of conceptual art. So, listen to some samples. Read up on Sorabji... a very interesting story. This is one for the collectors out there... you know who you are. "So sit upright in that straight backed chair and get ready for some... difficult music." -Laurie Anderson

Yes, there are flaws; and yes the recording quality could have been done better. But does that matter? I think not. This represents one of those rare achievements that deserves to be recognised at the maximum level even if one does not necessarily "get" it. It's a bit like a Pollack: even if you personally do not enjoy what happened, you still have to recognise that something historical happened there. From a compositional and performance standpoint, this recording is one of those historic points in time. I for one enjoy it immensely.
