Angrier, less funny

bill_bohrer

I really loved Carlin in his early days when he was doped to the gills and a whole lot funnier. In his later years Carlin just got angrier and angrier, ranting more and laughing less. Lewis Black is a far better master of insanely angry humor.

Carlin's Ruthless Magnum Opus

DevilsMischief

Like all great artists, Carlin's style evolved a lot over the years, but this album marked a real creative peak for him as a comedian and social commentator. It's NOT for prudes! Almost all of the people who claim to dislike this recording, hear a part of themselves among the hypocrites and mindless drones that Carlin exposes here.

Ugh...

hoarsefeathers

A big disapointment. Nothing even moderately humorous. Interesting observations but the venom he spews is a great talent diminished. The humour in it all is missing. Too bad seeing as he was without question one of the greatest!

An era ended, but not forgotten.

Thanks George. I've been laughing at your stuff since I was a kid, and I've never had reason to stop. We miss you. And, as an aside, those who have fought for our freedom of speech shouldn't cheapen their own sacrifices by complaining about which speech they were fighting for. Some of us may not like our government, but most of us love our country, and some of us even care about our countrymen. I thank the soldiers of our nation for their blood, sweat, and lives laid down. I will never forgive W or support his regime, but I respect our troops.

Crashed in a DarkHole 17

I usually don't respond to idiots but considering that my My Mom did not find my beer and Playboy in my bedroom and it was only 20 feet away did not mean it was not there, and I didn't even have a entire country of sand to bury it in. By the way I was there in the middle of it and for your info we talked about people like you. How we would like to have you over there to help us. You take your dumb fuckin ass out in the street and try to talk to them "peacefully" and when the come out and gut you like a pig then we will know where they are and we can protect the rest of the country by killing them. What do you think wanna help us out?...fucking lazy punks thinking that you are going to change the world from your cozy computer. Thanks George for making us laugh.

I Don't Worry About the Naysayers

ambientscott

I mean you have got to be totally square and lame to miss Carlin's humor here or to think he use to be 'simple.' Yet, I don't like Dreaux's or darkcrash's misogynist attacks on blueslovinwife. That besmirches Carlin's memory more than any of the numbskull negative reviews. That type of talk belongs under a Dane Cook mp3 download review or something.

"Purely unsophisticated"???

darkcrash17

Let me guess, "blueslovinwife" -- you found W's routine, "where are those WMD's? Under my desk? Behind the curtain?" a laugh riot. Or maybe those wacky Abu Ghraib pix brought big yuks to you. "Lefties"? Look, they've got you to repeat their code words like a good little parrot. Guess what -- W and Dick and all of his cronies and their lapdog media vermin are laughing at YOU. Because they OWN you (as Carlin would point out), they don't give a FUCK about you, and they'll work you like a puppet as much as they want. Oh by the way, THANKS for electing W and helping to bring us into this Magical Golden Age. You dopes don't get nearly enough credit for bringing W's reverse Midas touch to the rest of us. Let me guess, you voted for him 'cause he was the candidate "you'd most like to have a beer with". Did that line jerk your puppet strings? As if they'd let you into his country club to have a beer with him -- the "ex" alcoholic. The joke's on US. Have a nice day!

Baseball Music

By Dan Epstein, Contributor

Baseball and music are the twin obsessions of my life, but beyond drunken 7th inning renditions of "Take Me out to the Ballgame," I've always been fairly dubious about the wisdom of combining the two. Having grown up in an era where the only music heard at the ballpark came from a ghostly-sounding organ perched behind the press box, I find something extraordinarily distasteful about players running out onto the field to tune of '80s… more »

They Say All Music Guide

As the years progress, George Carlin only gets angrier — and, considering that the world is just getting more ridiculous, that may be the only response. Fortunately, his anger keeps him sharp, and that’s why he’s still fascinating and funny in 1999, when most of his peers have dried up. The key to his success is that he doesn’t continue to recycle his routines — he writes new material which illustrates that he’s not just a comedian, he’s a commentator. He tackles a number of subjects on You Are All Diseased, from familiar items like “Airport Security” to the silly cigar boom of the late ’90s, television, religion, and “American Bullshit.” Some of this is dead-on and some of it suffers from a delivery that is a bit too reminiscent of past routines, but it’s all entertaining and the best of it ranks with the best of his past work. Not many comedians could claim that their latter-day work is as good as the stuff that made their name, and that’s a strong testament to Carlin’s skills, talent and wit. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
