Try to find a better recording.

There's no substitute for Gerswhin playing Rhapsody in Blue. His energy and enthusiasm are unparallel by other artists, and after you hear his solo version, an orchestra only seems to get in the way. However, this recording is far inferior to others -- the piano playing is uneven and sloppy throughout. When you know how well Gershwin can play this piece, you can only find this recording to be a disappointment. I wish I could recommend others, but I threw this one into the trash can and kept my scratchy recording from the 1970's vinyl. Hopefully there are better ones on emusic.

Nobody ever played the Rhapsody better than Gershwin himself, in this (overdubbed) roll. It makes me wish I had a player piano. (In "That Certain Feeling," the composer is assisted by Erlebach, who probably filled out the bass while George let his fancy fly in the upper register.) Note, however, TN-THOR's comment — hold out for a better recording of the roll!

sweet and romantic

Right from the master -- this is perfectly played and achingly romantic.

Rhapsody in Blue

I love this piece! Long ago, I tried to learn (and play) the piano score, which I can still visualize as I hear Gershwin playing. It is such a great piece without the (usual) over-orchestration.

Gershwin at his Best

This is definitely a Collector's Item. Quite a number of the pieces were unknown to me, and, although many will consider the piano style very old-fashioned, the playing is really brilliant. For myself the highlight is the solo piano version of Rhapsody in Blue, and I loved the two slow numbers "I was so young" and "So am I".
