Giant Sand, Ramp (25th Anniversary Edition)
2011 | Label: Fire Records / The Orchard

“Your options are kind of limited,” Howe Gelb told The Quietus in 2010 of living in Tuscon. Fishing (“hard to do out there in Arizona”), TV (“a big waste of time”), and sex (“but that is a little sticky…”) all present problems: “So the best thing you can do is make some music with somebody.” On this rollicking, homespun 1991 album, Gelb proves it with a set of songs that veer from Neil Young-gnarly (“Romance of Falling,” “Warm Storm”) to chugging guest spots from Victoria Williams (“Wonder”) and seventyish country singer Pappy Allen.

A Marvellous Record

This is the best entryway into the world of Howe Gelb and Giant Sand I know of. Start with "Wonder," his duet with Victoria Williams, which features some of the Neil-est guitar outside of Topanga (the whole song's sort of a twisted Young/Emmylou Harris bit, actually), then go on to excellent blow-outs such as "Always Horses Coming" and "Warm Storm"--and you'll be locked on and looking for the other great GS records around here. Watch for Glum and Chore of Enchantment too, if they're available via eMusic or otherwise. You'll be pleased you did.
