Good mid-90's grunge/power pop

kenta

Great mid-90's power pop, with a lot of grunge-influenced aggression and noise thrown into the mix. There are some great songs here, especially "Mrs. Washington" and "Where I Find My Heaven". "Bloom" got some radio play in LA, as I recall. Warning, however: this is the UK version of Flippin' Out, not the US edition -- ten tracks instead of eleven, with "Easy Reader" in place of "Lemon Peeler" and "Ride On Baby Ride On" (both pretty good songs), and a significantly different track order. Still, a good album (though Pacific Ocean Blues is better).

I have had this CD for about 15 years and it still remains one of my favorites! Too bad there arent many more to pick from!

This Boston foursome have a varied approach to power-pop; lead guitarist Phil Hurley appears to have mastered hard rock (the catchy “Bloom”), moving ballads (the title track), and pop songs (“Mrs. Washington,” a close parody of “Mrs. Robinson”) with an ease that gives this album its consistency. Dave Gibbs’ sugar-sweet vocals and backing harmonization are the perfect accompaniment. – John Bush
