By the end of the 70s, Gil Scott-Heron had grown into a first-rate singer-songwriter. His early fans from his Flying Dutchman days revered him as a spoken word artist. They hung onto every word of his "raps" in live performances, which were spectacular with the Midnight Band back then. (Seek out their performance on SNL in its inaugural season.)
