Gilfema, Gilfema
Label: ObliqSound / IODA

A trio comprised of West African guitarist Lionel Loueke, Hungarian drummer Ferenc Nemeth and Swedish/Italian bassist Massimo Biolcati, Gilfema is as diverse and as far-reaching as that lineage suggests. Though clearly based in jazz, Gilfema isn't afraid to tug at its corners, making music that is restless and riveting. "Lost Magic" is as mystical as the title suggests, pairing a groaning bass with fluttering percussion and eerie, off-kilter harmonies. "Akwe" is rigid and percussive, Louke's brittle guitar snapping out a brisk and steady rhythm. Gilfema is the perfect example of music without borders, songs informed by different cultures and characters. Warm and rewarding.

Wonderful

This album has flown under the radar a bit, but it remains one of the great works of contemporary jazz/world music in the last few years. Lionel Loueke's technique is virtuosic and his playing is beautiful. Extremely melodic and lyrical. Ferenc Nemeth's drumming is breathtaking, incredibly responsive and supportive. Massimo Biolcati grooves hard and interacts beautifully. But beyond their individual mastery, their group sound is unparalleled. Utterly captivating. A must have to any jazz/world music listener, you'll listen to it daily for years.

Pure honey

This was a complete surprise! What a beautiful, soothing set of sounds and rhythms are found here. The songs are both gentle and stimulating and I have played this many many times over the past few months. Every now and then a little gem comes in under the radar and for me, in 2006, this is it!

They Say All Music Guide

Gilfema are a cooperative trio featuring West African guitarist and vocalist Lionel Loueke, Swiss-born Italian resident bassist Massimo Biolcati, and Hungarian drummer Ferenc Nemeth. All three equally split compositional credits, which is not so much a distinction in terms of the overall sound they agree upon. It’s modal world music in general — expressive, joyous, emotionally introspective, acoustically based, jazz inspired, and individualistic. The sounds are soaring, beautifully conceived, and concisely executed. As in the case of “Dream” and “Gbede Temin” in 6/8, “Vera” in 5/4, and “Tinmin” in 13/8, the employed complex time signatures melded with probing, exploratory minimalism appear simple and seemingly effortless. There’s an easy swaying waltz, two ballads, a light Afro-funk, and a highlife tune included in the repertoire. The three most unusual or unexpected twists manifest in the contrary locomotive brush work of Nemeth pitted against a pensive, dark stance of guitar/voice and bass during “Lost Magic,” a processed electric guitar and backward loops working with a truly complex rhythm on “Manding,” and Loueke’s uncharacteristic wah-wah going deep and heading underground for “Hormonix.” The guitarist’s vocal musings, gentle and warm, appear unobtrusively throughout, but are never distracting from his wonderful playing. For an ostensible debut this holds much promise, although one suspects this is not just a stand-alone working group, but one Loueke will lead, with a larger complement of musicians, in the future. – Michael G.
