String band of two possesses surprising versatility.
Label: Acony Records

It may seem a stretch to classify a duo as a string band, but Gillian Welch & David Rawlings clearly warrant an exception. Though their instrumentation never really goes beyond just two guitars, Rawlings 'remarkable range on his resophonic-styled 1935 Epiphone allows the duo surprising versatility. The blend of their voices brings rarefied beauty to covers of songs by Bob Dylan and Neil Young on this excellent sampler of audio tracks taken from a live DVD release. The originals are highlighted by "Revelator," punctuated by Rawlings solos that would be the envy of just about any other string-band musician.

The queen and king of country folk.

After years of waiting, at last got to see Gillian and Dave live at Warwick Arts Centre in November 2011. Unbelievably good. Gillian's lovely voice, great timeless songs and Dave Rawling's guitar - simply the best in the world! This album gives a tantalising taste of what they can do.

pick a song, you can't go wrong.respectful of tradional bluegrass/folk with a sound uniquely their own.have to see them live to fully appreciate them. I'd pay to hear her sing the yellow pages and dave's solo playing soars above others.

So sick

Gillian Welch is money in the bank. She sounds even better live, which doesn't seem to happen very often.

Welch Comes Alive

Hearing these songs live gives them a vitality that lifts them above the sometimes meandering qualities they have on record.

Solid, solid stuff

Real mellow vibe. Interesting choice of covers. Spectacular acoustic guitar solo on the title track. Pocahontas better than the original. Will probably have a lifetime spot on the iPod.

It's not emusic's fault ...

To my friends in the UK - the owners of copyright make decisions about which territories tracks can be sold in. There is zilch emusic can do about it. Fortunately, I can download these tracks in Australia, but I occasionally face the same problem (often, not surprisingly, with Australian artists.) You just have to live with it.

Young String Bands

By Peter Blackstock, eMusic Contributor

Survey the spring and summer festival circuit across America and, along with the big-time rock events such as Lollapalooza, Coachella and Bonnaroo, you'll find that there are dozens -- if not hundreds -- of events devoted to traditional music based on acoustic instrumentation. While these folk festivals, bluegrass gatherings and old-time hoedowns tend to be geared toward older performers (and audiences), in recent years a younger generation of so-called "string bands" has emerged, revitalizing the… more »
