The second in Avid’s six CD sets featuring Glenn Miller’s Army Air Force Band has 47 fine performances. If one combines Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 from this British label, one gets all of the music included on RCA’s three-CD set The Secret Broadcasts (except for a minute and a half rendition of “My Blue Heaven”) plus 19 additional performances; more general listeners may want the RCA release while completists should opt for the Avids. In any case, this music is state-of-the-art 1944 swing with more than its share of variety. The spirited performances include swing standards, older Glenn Miller hits from his peacetime orchetra, inventive mood music, ballad vocals from Johnny Desmond and some fresh and jumping jazz originals. – Scott Yanow
