My statement still stands - Not Greg's best

RayC

Sorry Jazzmine, what I say still stands. I heartily suggest anyone to check out Greg's work on Red House. It's fantastic. But here, on emusic, you get a very weak version of what he can do. Your insults continue to roll off my back, Jazzmine, and my assessment still stands.

And the nominee for best...

jazzmine

....folk artist of the last 10 years is.... ...Greg Brown> And you know RayC, there are a couple of great Greg recordings on eMusic. However, you're negative little girl whine ruins it everytime one looks in on Greg here. Shut up!

An Incredible Talent

MKR

I'll be the first to admit Greg Brown is not for everyone: it took me a while to warm to him. However, if you want to hear some of the most unique, genuine, passionate folk music ever recorded, check this guy out. This is a very dark album for him and therefore not the best introduction, but if you like what you hear, you'll probably enjoy some of his albums on Red House Records.

The Real Deal

BudSalt1

Such an underrated songwriter, at any rate in the UK. We get Buddy Miller, Slaid Cleaves, Pierce Pettis, Tom Kimmel, Michael Fracasso (to name but a few) - all great artists and writers. We even get a Greg tribute album released over here but the real deal remains bubbling below the surface. Not for much longer, I hope, as Greg Brown has a great gift as a modern country blues artist with a delicious twist of humour and a line in lyrics that redefine the meaning of the word 'original'. Let's hope emusic can get hold of more of his material soon.

They Say All Music Guide

Taking a vacation from Red House, his regular label, Greg Brown recorded this collection for the even smaller Trailer Records, which is based in his home state of Iowa. Recorded in just two days, it has a live-in-the-studio feel, which for the most part, is probably just what it is. There are some off-the-cuff and even off-the-wall experiments here — stuff that might not have made it onto a more official Brown release on Red House. Be that as it may, though, this is mostly terrific stuff. Brown’s gravelly vocals are as good as ever, and so are his songs, which range from playful and silly to poignant and powerful. Among the best in the latter category: “857-5413,” in which a more than slightly drunken man calls up his now-married ex-lover. Brown fans will find a lot on this album to get excited about, and aside from the cheap cardboard packaging, virtually nothing to complain about. – Jeff Burger
