Known variously as “the Lonely Lover” and “the Cool Ruler,” Gregory Isaacs has offered a reliable blend of smoldering passion and support for the sufferers of the world. Several of his most popular anthems for lovers and rockers are contained in Mr. Isaacs. “Slavemaster” carries the payload that most full albums would be lucky to deliver within a single song: assuming the character of a vengeful slave, Isaac's lilting vocals are ornamented by horn refrains that sink deep hooks into a listener's consciousness. All of these aspects and more coalesce into unstoppable dance grooves — as unlikely as the subject matter makes that sound.
