Jazz vocals with just the right amount of edge
2011 | Label: Obliqsound / Entertainment One Distribution

In some circles, the invocation of "jazz vocals" runs only slightly behind "lite funk" as an excuse to utter "no thanks." If that's an accurate summary of your attitude, you'll want to work against muscle-memory here. Gretchen Parlato sings with a delicate touch — she doesn't favor much vibrato or tricky, endless strings of scatted syllables — though the wealth of detail in her timing and dynamic range makes for an interesting contrast alongside that breathy tone. This lady is very smoothe, subtle and sophisticated without being over-the-top, diva-ish, or plain conceited about it. She's a breath of fresh air and she makes REAL MUSIC!!! Go figure?!!!

Just heard this woman on NPR an hour ago. Such a LOVELY voice!! Incredible! Smoothest singer since Sade. Parlato manages to sound innocent and incredibly sexy at the same time. Breezy, breathy, romantic, and VERY warm..which I find rather stimulating. She leaves me feeling both relaxed and turned on. Amazing woman, amazing voice.

Taking their lead, young singers over the last decade have been swinging the vocal tradition onto a new plateau with a pop sensibility. In the mix are tunes by… more »
